Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer discuss Gabriel Gudmundsson own goal

Leeds United suffered one of the cruellest defeats of the Premier League weekend after Gabriel Gudmundsson scored a bizarre last-minute own goal against Fulham on Saturday.

The Whites looked set to secure a valuable point at Craven Cottage, with Daniel Farke’s tactics frustrating the home side throughout the game. Leeds had battled hard, created chances, and more than deserved something from the match. Given their poor record in London in recent seasons, a draw would have been seen as a solid result.

But football can be brutally unfair. With the clock showing 94 minutes, Fulham earned a late corner. The delivery appeared harmless, yet it bounced off Gudmundsson’s head and looped into the one place Karl Darlow couldn’t reach. The own goal sealed a dramatic 1-0 defeat for Leeds.

Gudmundsson’s Emotional Response

The devastation on Gudmundsson’s face told the whole story. At full-time, the Swedish defender immediately approached the travelling Leeds fans to apologise. Manager Daniel Farke embraced his summer signing from Lille, showing his support after the heartbreaking moment.

On The Rest is Football, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer shared their sympathy for Gudmundsson, who joined Leeds in a £10m move.

Lineker said:

“Poor Gudmundsson, felt for him, 94th minute, he’s headed into his own goal. Apparently, he was in tears in the dressing room after the game. Just one of those flukish things, bit of luck for Fulham.”

Shearer added:

“I mean, how’s your luck. Kevin had the shot, keeper saved it, they get the corner and then, oh. There’s not a lot he could do, to be honest. I actually felt for him, so unlucky.”

Leeds had worked tirelessly for a result, but a cruel twist of fate left them with nothing to show for their efforts. For Gudmundsson, it was a night to forget — but one that underlined just how fine the margins are in the Premier League.
