How we've fared and who we've shared. The 2025-26 Premier League teams from a Chelsea perspective : Part 2 - Aston Villa

Aston Villa have been in existence since the 1870s. They were the first team to have a football manager and have stayed at the same ground since 1897. Villa Park is a fantastic stadium, used often by the England National Team - it just played host to possibly the Greatest Concert of All Time as Birmingham local Ozzy Osbourne gave us one last gift before he departed.

Villa have a European Cup win, kudos to them. They also have won all there is to win domestically, though only 2 of those wins have come in the Premier League era. Those were EFL Cup wins, the first a year after the Premier League was founded in 1992. Villa finished 2nd that year, and they would not reach those heights again.

Premier League Record - W30 - D14 - L16

Chelsea Away wins (13, =2nd)

Chelsea Away points (47, 2nd)

Chelsea Away goals (42, 3rd)

Biggest Premier League win (8-0)

Key Fixtures

In the 2000 FA Cup Final, a late goal from Robert Di Matteo gave us a 1-0 win over Villa at the old Wembley Stadium. Luke Moore scored at Stamford Bridge in Gameweek 6 in 2005, the first goal Chelsea had conceded that season. A brace from Super Frank Lampard meant we won 2-1 anyway, we started our succesful title defence with 9 straight wins under Mourinho. The special Portuguese manager was gone a week after a 2-0 loss at Villa Park in 2007. The reverse fixture that year saw a thrilling 4-4 draw, with Shevchenko and Ballack scoring memorable goals.

From the few stats you can see that Villa Park is a place we have plundered in the League, but there have been damning defeats. Not at Stamford Bridge and definitely not for King Carlo though, as we ran out 7-1 winners in 2010. 2 years later a lovely Fernando Torres header set a Rafa Benitez managed Chelsea side on their way to an 8-0 win. This remains our biggest Premier League win. Mourinho would return but leave in the middle of a dreadful 2015-16 for the club, Hiddink would return to steady the ship and an eye-catching result at the time was a 4-0 win at Villa Park, Alexandre Pato breaking his Chelsea duck with a penalty. Villa had it worse than us that season, as they went down.

Alexandre Pato scores his only Chelsea goal as the Blues win 4-0 at Villa Park

They returned in 2019, and since then its been a mixed bag for us. Home wins have been hard to come by for both teams. In fact, we've faced each other 9 times since a Lukaku double promised so much in 2021, with no home wins till we won 3-0 last year. They are now our serious rivals for Qualification to the Champions League and have a proven manager in Unai Emery who has done a fantastic job.

They Played for Both

John Terry spent one year as a player at Villa before becoming Assistant Manager

When Villa went down in 2016, they needed help to come back up. He only played for us in the Premier League, but our Captain, Leader & Legend John Terry played one season for Aston Villa in the Championship. They would not make it back up immediately as JT went on to coach at Villa, so Chelsea sent Tammy Abraham their way. The lanky forward would score 25 times for the Villains before returning to Chelsea and scoring 30 more.

There are a few players who went both ways, Andy Townsend, who you might have heard on FIFA, played the inaugural Premier League season with Chelsea before spending 4 years as a Villain. Both Joe & Carlton Cole had seasons at Villa. Carney Chukwuemeka is one player who made a name for himself at Villa Park before his 3 years at Chelsea.

Gary Cahill won every trophy there is at Chelsea.

While John Terry will remain the best player to play for both clubs, a shout out must go to the man who played by his side for a while before taking over the Chelsea armband. Before breaking out at Bolton, Gary Cahill had 2 years at Aston Villa. Cahill has a fabulous catalogue of goals and won all there is to win with Chelsea, famously becoming a Champions League winner 6 months removed from playing at the Reebok Stadium. Cahill retired in 2022 after a season in the Championship with Bournemouth, who in fact are the team to look at in Part 3.

We're 3 weeks into the 2025-26 English Premier League season. Entering as World Champions, Palace tempered our high expectations in Week 1. We bounced back in some style, putting 5 past West Ham away in a fixture that has not been so giving to us in the past. We stayed in London and edged past Fulham at home. That's been a relative banker for us in the Premier League - except last season when they got their first ever win at the Bridge. The Blues have been a staple of the Premier League since i
