Lamine Yamal a Doubt for Newcastle vs Barcelona in Champions League

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is facing a race against time to be fit for Thursday’s Champions League clash against Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Cadenaser.com have suggested that he may not be ready to play on Thursday, which will be a huge news for Newcastle fans. The 18-year-old talent has been ruled out of recent training sessions due to ongoing discomfort in the pubic area, raising serious doubts about his availability for the midweek fixture.

Injury Concerns Mount

Barcelona confirmed earlier this week that Yamal is suffering from pubic discomfort, the same issue that forced him to miss the La Liga match against Valencia. Club doctors are monitoring his progress daily, but no clear timeline has been given for his return.

The medical team’s main concern is preventing the problem from worsening. At just 18, Yamal is one of the most promising young players in Europe, and Barcelona are wary of taking unnecessary risks.

Hansi Flick Blames Spain for Worsening Injury

Head coach Hansi Flick, who led Barcelona to a historic domestic treble in the 2024-25 season, has been outspoken about how the Spanish national team handled Yamal during the recent international break.

Despite feeling pain, Yamal played 73 and 79 minutes across two matches for Spain, reportedly while using painkillers. Flick criticised the decision, stressing that the winger should have been rested with the games already under control.

“Lamine didn’t train with Spain but still played almost full matches. That was not responsible,” Flick said.

Likely to Miss Newcastle Clash

With the crucial European tie against Newcastle approaching, Barcelona are expected to take a cautious approach. Flick described Yamal as a “doubt” for Thursday, and dressing-room sources believe the teenager will not be risked.

If Yamal is unavailable, Barcelona have several attacking options to turn to. Raphinha, Ferran Torres, and new signing Marcus Rashford are all in contention to start on the wing.

Looking Ahead

Yamal’s injury comes at a challenging time for Barcelona, who begin their Champions League campaign in a tough group. However, with Flick recently extending his contract until 2027, the club is focused on balancing short-term results with long-term player health.

For now, Barcelona fans will have to wait and see whether their teenage sensation recovers in time. But all signs suggest that Yamal may need more rest before making his return to action.
