Omar Alderete Turned Down Roma to Join “Historic” Sunderland in Premier League Move
Sunderland’s summer signing Omar Alderete has already made a strong impression on Wearside — and now it’s been revealed that the Paraguayan defender turned down a move to Italian giants AS Roma to join the newly promoted Premier League side. According to his agent, Renato Bittar, Alderete saw Sunderland as a club with history, ambition, and the right environment to take the next step in his career.
Alderete Chooses Premier League Over Serie A
Alderete joined Sunderland from La Liga outfit Getafe in mid-August and has featured in all four of the Black Cats’ Premier League matches so far, helping the team to two clean sheets and just three goals conceded. But according to Bittar, the 26-year-old was close to signing for Roma before Sunderland entered the race.
“When the Premier League appears, and a historic club like Sunderland, there is not much to think about from our point of view,” Bittar said on Versus Radio.
He added that Alderete was drawn to the intensity and prestige of English football, describing the Premier League as “top level” and likening its weekly competition to the Champions League.
Alderete: “I’m Really Happy to Be Here”
Speaking at the time of his arrival, Alderete expressed his excitement about joining Sunderland and taking on the challenge of Premier League football.
“I’m feeling great about signing for this great team, so I’m really happy,” he said. “I know it’s a historic club, and when they told me there was an opportunity, I was excited about coming here.”
Alderete also emphasized the importance of fan support and pledged to give his all on the pitch.
Speakman: “He’s Connected to Our Story”
Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman praised Alderete’s experience and fit within the club’s tactical model.
“It was important for us to identify and add a left-sided centre back for the group,” Speakman said. “In Omar, we have an aggressive and athletic player who can move the ball efficiently in possession. He’s connected to our story and where we want to go.”
A Key Piece in Sunderland’s Premier League Puzzle
Alderete’s decision to join Sunderland over Roma speaks volumes about the club’s growing appeal. With significant investment, a clear vision under head coach Régis Le Bris, and a strong start to the season, the Black Cats are proving they belong in the top flight.
For Alderete, the move is already paying off — and for Sunderland, it’s another sign that their Premier League return is more than just a promotion. It’s a statement.
