Pressure Mounts on Ruben Amorim After Worst League Start Since 1992

Manchester United’s slow start to the 2025/26 Premier League season has intensified pressure on head coach Ruben Amorim, who has managed to win only 25.8% of his league games in charge.

Manchester United’s Poor Form Continues

United have secured just two victories in their last 13 Premier League matches, including a disappointing 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City on Sunday. This latest result has further highlighted United’s struggles and deepened concerns among supporters.

Despite fan frustration, senior club officials remain supportive of Amorim. Sources inside Old Trafford claim that statistically, United are performing better in several areas compared to last season, even though they currently sit 14th in the Premier League with just four points from their opening four matches. It marks their worst league start since the 1992/93 season.

Underlying Stats Show Signs of Progress

While results have been poor, certain underlying statistics indicate modest improvement. Since March, United’s non-penalty expected goal difference (xGD) ranks in the Premier League’s top eight. However, this progress has been undone by critical weaknesses at both ends of the pitch.

  • United have scored nine fewer goals than expected based on the quality of chances created.
  • The team has conceded 3.4 more goals than anticipated, pointing to wasteful finishing and inconsistent goalkeeping.

These fine margins have left Amorim’s side with only 13 points since March – joint-lowest among ever-present Premier League clubs, alongside West Ham.

Amorim Needs Results, Not Just Progress

While there are subtle signs that Amorim’s tactical ideas are beginning to take effect, results remain the ultimate measure. Unless Manchester United start converting chances and tightening up defensively, Amorim’s position could soon come under greater scrutiny.

For now, United’s hierarchy continues to back the Portuguese coach – but a tangible turnaround in results is urgently required if he is to buy himself more time at Old Trafford.
