Entering the danger time

Sky Blue fans will be fairly pleased at our start to the season. Two wins and a draw and looking much more likely to score against Derby County. Worries persist though. On the pitch, we look vulnerable at the back despite playing our first choice defenders.

But it may be off the pitch that the main concerns are. We've already raised the spectre of losing our best players in the transfer window before the season is in full swing. Last week brought refreshed worries with a host of clubs (including Leicester, Newcastle and Southampton) chasing Jack Rudoni hard.

Rudoni is arguably by the far the most important player in our squad, perhaps the only one who is likely to contribute a goal and/or an assist in every game. Over the last two years we have lost all our magic players, the ones who can create something out of nothing. Liam O'Hare and Gus Hamer went to Sheffield United with Hamer one of the few United players who looked at home in the Prem last year. He's still using his wand this season - if you haven't already seen it, check out this goal from the halfway line last week. It was still a bit of wrench for me to see Kasey Palmer turning out for Hull City in our first game of the season.

So, we definitely need to keep hold of Rudoni. I worry that his unusually sub-par performance against Derby means that he was preoccupied with moving away from the CBS Arena.

Just as worrying is Sheffield United's pursuit (do they want all our best players?) of Bobby Thomas. Not only is he probably our best centre back, he is a menace in the opposition box as he showed Saturday lunchtime with both a goal and an assist (to be honest, I fancied myself to finish that header which bounced off the bar on to the goal-line).

The one bright spot is that Rudoni is signed up to us until 2028 and Bobby T to 2027. I hope that means we can keep them both and not just that we can leverage a decent price for them. As always, it's a blow to lose your best players but a double blow to lose them in the transfer window when opportunities for replacements are slim. Roll on 7 p.m. on Monday 1st September when the damn window closes.
