Roy Keane Slams Manchester United Defending in Derby Defeat to Manchester City
Manchester United’s defensive frailties were laid bare once again in Sunday’s Manchester derby, as Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City cruised to a 3–0 win at the Etihad Stadium. The opening goal, scored by Phil Foden in the 18th minute, drew fierce criticism from former United captain Roy Keane, who singled out Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes for their roles in the build-up.

⚽ Foden’s Opener Sparks Outrage
City’s first goal came from a well-worked move down the left flank, with Jeremy Doku breezing past Shaw before delivering a cross that Foden headed into the far corner. While the finish was clinical, Keane was far more concerned with the ease at which United allowed the goal to happen.
“Very good from City, Doku and Foden… timing perfect,” Keane said on Sky Sports. “But United’s defending, the two midfielders beforehand are too square and Shaw just gives up.”
Keane, never one to mince words, was scathing in his assessment of Shaw’s positioning and effort.
“He’s got hundreds of games under his belt, he doesn’t even get his body position right. It’s like he has thrown the towel in.”

🧠 Fernandes Also Under Fire
Micah Richards, also on the Sky Sports panel, pointed the finger at Bruno Fernandes for failing to track Foden’s run.
“He just loses Foden there. Just switches off and it wasn’t good enough,” Richards said.
Keane echoed the sentiment, noting that Fernandes’ defensive lapses have become a recurring issue.
“We know people can run off the back of Bruno, that’s been going on for years.”
🔄 Tactical Breakdown
Keane’s criticism extended beyond individual errors, highlighting United’s midfield shape as a key vulnerability.
“Even before that, you’ve got two midfielders — they are too square. One pass takes them out. Far too easy.”
The lack of compactness and awareness in United’s midfield allowed City to exploit space and build momentum early in the match.
🔥 City Dominate, United Counter
While United did pose a threat on the counter, with Benjamin Sesko forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into two smart saves, City remained in control. Their probing attacks and fluid movement kept United on the back foot, and the 1–0 scoreline at half-time flattered the visitors.
Guardiola would have been pleased with his side’s composure and execution, especially with Foden scoring his first Premier League goal since January.
🧩 Amorim’s Challenge
For United manager Ruben Amorim, the derby defeat raises serious questions about his side’s defensive discipline and tactical structure. With pressure mounting and pundits like Keane and Richards calling out fundamental flaws, the road ahead looks increasingly steep.
As City continue to set the standard, United must find answers — and fast — if they hope to compete at the top level.
