Thomas Partey Pleads Not Guilty to Rape and Sexual Assault Charges

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has pleaded not guilty to a series of serious charges at Southwark Crown Court. The 32-year-old is accused of five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, relating to three women between 2021 and 2022, when he was playing for Arsenal.

Details of the Hearing

At Wednesday’s 14-minute court appearance, Partey spoke only to confirm his identity and enter not guilty pleas. The case will now go to trial on November 2, 2026, presided over by a High Court judge.

Judge Christopher Hehir acknowledged the long wait, citing the court backlog:
“Because you are on bail, you are behind a queue of people in prison who are waiting to be tried.”

Bail Conditions

Partey remains on bail under strict conditions. He cannot contact the three women involved in the case and must inform police of any change of address or international travel plans.

Timeline of Events

  • July 2022: Partey was first arrested, though not publicly named at the time. He continued to play for Arsenal while the investigation continued.
  • June 30, 2025: His Arsenal contract expired.
  • July 4, 2025: He was formally charged.
  • September 2025: He appeared in court one day after playing for Villarreal in the Champions League against Tottenham.

Club and Managerial Response

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta previously stated he was “100 per cent” confident the club had handled the situation correctly during the investigation. An Arsenal spokesperson added:
“The player’s contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the club is unable to comment further.”

Partey’s Career Background

Partey joined Arsenal in 2020 from Atletico Madrid in a £45 million deal. He made 35 Premier League appearances last season, scoring four times. On the international stage, he has earned over 50 caps for Ghana, featuring at both the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.

He now plays for Spanish side Villarreal, where he featured this week against Spurs in the Champions League.

⚖️ Next steps: Partey’s trial is scheduled for November 2026, with the midfielder continuing under bail conditions until then.
