Wolves player ratings vs Bournemouth, August 23

Wolves suffered a narrow but telling 1-0 loss to Bournemouth, with an early goal from Marcus Tavenier and an early second-half red card for Toti Gomes proving decisive; these two moments encapsulated a tough afternoon for the visitors. Here are our player ratings for Wolves.

Starting XI

Jose Sa - 7

Made crucial saves, including denying a powerful Tyler Adams shot late on, did his best to keep the scoreline respectable despite lacking in defensive support and wasn't at fault for the first goal.

Ki-Jana Hoever - 6

Delivered a decent cross within the first ten minutes for Jørgen Strand Larsen, but was substituted in the first half due to injury.

Matt Doherty - 6

Not his best performance, but nothing terrible; he should have been booked for an unnecessarily high boot, but it was a generally solid showing.

Toti Gomes - 3

Dreadful afternoon for the new Wolves captain, needlessly booked within 10 minutes of the first half, then shown a straight red for denying a goal-scoring opportunity on the edge of the box, leaving his teammates a player down for almost the entire second half. Not showing the leadership the club needs right now.

Emmanuel Agbadou - 4

A second poor performance for Agbadou, who was so solid at the back last season. Deflected the Bournemouth goal in, was careless in possession, took a poor free kick in a promising attacking position for some reason and almost collided with the goalkeeper.

David Møller Wolfe - 6

Did his job well enough in the first half and made a great run early on, but was substituted at halftime.

João Gomes - 7

Showed the most energy and fight on the pitch, had a difficult afternoon with a particularly intense Bournemouth midfield, but battled for every ball.

Jean Ricner-Bellegarde - 5

Out of position to begin with, but his day didn't start well after losing the ball that led to the goal after attempting to play out from the back. He was then mostly anonymous for the rest of the half, after which he was substituted.

Marshall Munetsi - 4

Didn't really do much of anything, offered nothing defensively or going forward—baffling decision for him to play the full 90 minutes when there were attacking options on the bench.

Jhon Arias - 6

Showcased an incredible work rate and commitment to winning the ball back on his first Premier League start, but was the unfortunate casualty of Toti's red card as he was subbed off for defensive reinforcements.

Jørgen Strand Larsen - 6

Strand Larsen cut a frustrated figure up front, often isolated with no service or creativity coming in.

Substitutes -

Jackson Tchatchoua - 7

Introduced following the injury to Hoever and stepped up brilliantly on his Wolves debut. Showcased his pace and physicality throughout and ran back to cover his defensive duties. Overall, he looked like a real threat going forward and may have just forced his way into the starting lineup.

Hugo Bueno - 7

Another wing-back who looked bright going forward, put in a good cross immediately into the second half, although he was pointlessly booked for dissent. Tightened up the defence after Toti's red card, so it was limited going forward after that.

André - 7

Completely baffling from a tactical standpoint that he didn't start, and as soon as he was introduced at half time, the midfield was greatly improved, and held off Bournemouth much better even when down to ten men.

Santiago Bueno - 6

Replaced Arias after Toti's sending off and managed his defensive duties well enough and helped keep the score at 1-0.

Hwang Hee-chan - 4

Came on late in the game and didn't really have any time to make an impact, but never really looked like any threat.
