Jack Grealish claims Player of the Month after City departure

In just his first month after leaving Manchester City to join Everton on loan, Jack Grealish has won the Premier League Player of the Month award for August.

Despite only starting two of the first three games, Grealish picked up four assists, which beats his total from his previous two campaigns combined.

Many have pointed to Pep Guardiola as the reason for Grealish's struggles at City which led to his exit, but his performances in the treble winning season suggest otherwise.

First season struggles

Jack Grealish signed for Manchester City for a British record £100 million in the summer of 2021 and went on to win three Premier League titles, an FA Cup and the Champions League, but it was far from plain sailing for him at City.

He himself was very open and honest about his struggles in his first year in which he still came out with a Premier League medal but only managed three goals and three assists in his 26 appearances.

"I feel like I could have done better, obviously. I’ve said that a lot of times. I feel I could have scored more, assisted more, and had more of an impact on certain games."

Grealish went on to say how he learnt a lot from his first year and that he found it difficult to adapt to a new environment.

The treble season

The former Villa man played a huge part in his second season as he was a mainstay in the team which went on to win the treble, including the clubs first ever Champions League.

With five goals and 7 assists in the league as well as big performances in the other competitions, Grealish was almost undroppable and he started all of the big games and major finals that City got to that season.

His form had changed drastically from the previous year and it seemed that he had completely bought into the Pep way of playing and thinking with his outstanding performances almost every week.

Two difficult years

Grealish's last two seasons at City can almost be put into one with how similar they ended up being in terms of form, output and his struggles with injuries which halted any run in the team.

He played just 20 league games in both seasons and only picked up one assist in each and scored four goals in the two years.

With the arrival of Savinho and Jeremy Doku he struggled to nail down the left side as his own as he did in the 2022/23 season and every time he seemed to play well he would be struck with an injury that would see him move down the pecking order again.

The Grealish revival

Jack Grealish joined Everton on loan in an attempt to show the world what he is capable of and to just try to enjoy his football again.

Everton manager David Moyes has been full of praise with how Grealish has settled in and the impact he has had on the team with his talent and creativity that he has brought to the side.

"I think some of his football has been really good. The biggest compliment I could probably give him is he’s better than I thought he was. You know, he’s so good."

After coming off the bench and impressing in his first game, Grealish started the next two and recorded two assists in each as Everton picked up six points from a possible nine.

Moyes also praised the mentality of the Englishman by saying that this is all down to 'Jack's mentality' and not to do with the coaching. He said that he feels that Grealish has something to prove to himself and everyone else.

With a World Cup coming up at the end of the year, if Grealish is able to continue this type of form it seems he will be guaranteed a place in Tuchel's squad as he offers something completely different to any of the other winger options.
