Rico Lewis signs new five year contract at Manchester City

Manchester City defender Rico Lewis has signed a new five year contract extension that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030.

The club also have an option to extend the contract by a further year until 2031 if they wish to do so.

After making 44 appearances last season, Lewis has been rewarded with a new deal which could take his stay in the first team to nine years after he broke through from the academy in 2022.

Rico Lewis who has been used as both a full-back and a midfielder has said he is delighted to stay at his boyhood club which he joined when he was just eight years old.

"Manchester City means everything to me so to have been given the opportunity to sign this new contract is such a special moment both for me personally and my family."

The 20-year-old also pointed towards his manager, Pep Guardiola, as a reason why he wanted to sign a new contract to stay in Manchester.

"I am still improving and developing as a player, and I know that the opportunity to carry on working with Pep, his coaching team and our amazing squad will only help me to keep getting better."

Rico Lewis had been linked with a move away in the summer with Nottingham Forest interested, but both the player and the club turned it down and his future now lies with City after putting pen to paper on this long term deal.

Since he made his way from the academy to the first team during the treble season in 2022/23, Lewis has won seven major trophies, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League.

He has scored five goals for the senior team as he is mainly deployed in a right back role, but he did manage a goal on his first start in the Champions League and became the youngest player to do so at just 17 years of age.
