Player Profile: Enzo Fernandez

Enzo Fernandez is a really intriguing player with so much quality who has already achieved so much at the young age of 24. He is a serial winner having won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022, the UEFA Conference league and the Club World Cup with Chelsea last year and taking home individual awards such as the best young player at the World cup in 2022.

He has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and is looking to make a statement this year. The young Argentinian became the first player to win both the world cup and club world cup and is looking to add more silverware to his already large collection.

The Rise of Enzo Fernandez

The Argentinian was born on the outskirts of Buenos Aries in January 2001. His footballing journey began at his local team Club La Recova before being scouted to join the River Plate academy at the age of just 5. Enzo made his way up the ranks in the river plate academy system and got a call up to the reserves in 2019. Shortly after, he was named in the first team squad and was on the bench in a defeat to Patronato.

Enzo made his debut for Riverplate in 2020 in a Copa Libertadores defeat to LDU Quito. Enzo went on a short loan spell playing for Hernan Crespo's Defensa y Justica before being called back to River plate and making himself a consistent starter. Enzo went from strength to strength establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in the league. The following season Enzo raised his level again, registering 10 goals and 6 assists in 26 appearances for River Plate.

He started to gain some eyes from European clubs and ended up joining Portuguese side Benfica. Enzo did not need much time settling into life in a Benfica shirt, being named the Liga No's best midfeilder of the month in August, October and November. Enzo's form was crucial in helping Benfica win the league undefeated and also top a Champions league group containing PSG and Juventus.

Enzo ended up earning himself a big money move to the premier league after signing for Chelsea in 2023, a deal that made headlines around the world.

International Career

At the young age of 24, Enzo Fernandez has already had a very accomplished international career with many awards to his name. Enzo is a World Cup winner, having won the world cup with Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The tournament is where Enzo truly announced himself to the world, taking home the young player of the tournament award and making a statement with a fantastic goal against Mexico. The goal proved to be a life changing one for Enzo as it propelled him and Argentina to the trophy and established himself as one of the best young midfielders in the world. Enzo's personal rise in the national team was rather fast having only made his debut for Argentina 2 months prior to the world cup.

As he continues to grow as a player and a captain Enzo looks to mark his name in the squad for the 2026 world cup where he will have the chance to once again show the world what he is capable of on the world stage.

Chelsea Career

Enzo's Chelsea career has been one of up's and down's, however he has cemented his place in the team and is a crucial part of the way that Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca like's to play. He has taken to the role well and has established himself has a goal scoring threat.

Enzo started his Chelsea career formally known as a defensive minded midfielder and impressed with his range of passing and his ability to beat the press. The following year saw the arrival of his counterpart in midfield Moises Caicedo. This gave Enzo more of a free reign in midfield allowing him to play more box to box which gave him the licence to get into attacking positions more frequently.

The fans sometimes were harsh on the midfielder criticising him for performances largely because of the price tag that Chelsea signed him for. He however responded in a stand out performance against Aston Villa away where he scored a magical free kick and was named man of the match.

The absence of Reece James saw Enzo take the captains armband and establish himself as a real leader in the Chelsea squad. Enzo played his 100th game for the blues against Ipswich Town and made a strong finish to the season winning the UEFA Conference league.

I am really excited to see what the future of Enzo looks like in a Chelsea shirt and i am excited for all the triumph and success that he will still achieve with the blues.

We have reached the first international break of the season which means it is time to review Chelsea's opening 3 games and discuss the positives, negatives and everything in between. Chelsea go into the break in second position on the table behind Liverpool sitting on 7 points, winning 2 out of their 3 games and drawing the other one.
