Régis Le Bris Hints at Defensive Continuity Ahead of Sunderland’s Clash with Crystal Palace
Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris has suggested that new signing Lutsharel Geertruida is unlikely to make his full debut this weekend, as the Black Cats prepare to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Despite the Dutch international’s versatility and pedigree, Le Bris is expected to stick with the defensive unit that helped secure a 2–1 win over Brentford before the international break.

🛡️ Geertruida’s Arrival and Role
Geertruida joined Sunderland from RB Leipzig on deadline day in a season-long loan deal that includes a €23 million option to buy next summer. The 25-year-old, who has featured across defence and midfield for Leipzig, Feyenoord, and the Netherlands national team, was signed primarily to bolster Sunderland’s centre-back options.
“I believe that his best position is probably centre-back,” Le Bris said. “He is really versatile… he can play a bit wider or even in the midfield. We will try to exploit this profile.”
Le Bris emphasized Geertruida’s ball-playing ability, noting that his passing range and composure were key factors in Sunderland’s pursuit of a new defender after a move for Bologna’s Jhon Lucumí fell through.
🧠 Tactical Fit and Integration
Although Geertruida has not been on international duty and has had time to settle at the Academy of Light, Le Bris is taking a measured approach to his integration. The defender has participated in five or six training sessions and undergone video analysis, but Le Bris believes more time is needed before he’s ready to start.
“He can manage different positions through possessional play… hopefully that will help him add some different layers,” Le Bris added.
🔁 Defensive Continuity at Selhurst Park
With Sunderland winning two of their first three matches, Le Bris is keen to maintain momentum and avoid unnecessary changes. Injuries to Dan Ballard, Luke O’Nien, Aji Alese, Dennis Cirkin, and Leo Hjelde have limited options, but the current back four is expected to remain unchanged.
- Centre-backs: Nordi Mukiele & Omar Alderete
- Full-backs: Trai Hume & Reinildo Mandava
“It’s a question of momentum,” Le Bris said. “The players who have been starting deserve to keep playing.”
🔮 Long-Term Vision
While Geertruida may not start against Palace, Le Bris made it clear that the Dutchman will have opportunities as the season progresses. With a long Premier League campaign ahead, squad rotation and depth will be crucial.
“We know the journey will be long… there will probably be injuries and suspensions. With these eight or nine defensive players, they will all have opportunities.”
⚔️ Palace Test Awaits
Sunderland’s only away game so far ended in defeat at Burnley, and Saturday’s trip to Selhurst Park presents another challenge. But with a settled back line and growing squad depth, Le Bris is confident his side can continue their strong start — and Geertruida’s time will come.
