Ruben Amorim Under Pressure at Manchester United: Timeline, Reactions and Concerns

Manchester United’s difficult start to the season has once again put manager Ruben Amorim under intense scrutiny following Sunday’s heavy defeat to rivals Manchester City.
United’s Worst Start in Over 30 Years
The loss at the Etihad confirmed United’s worst opening to a season since 1992/93. After showing promise but falling short against Arsenal on the opening day, Amorim’s side have only managed one win – against Burnley – from their first four league matches. Their only other point came in a draw at Fulham.
Amorim’s overall record doesn’t make for good reading either: just eight wins from 31 Premier League games in charge. Based on results since his appointment, United sit bottom of the table when compared against other long-standing top-flight clubs.

Amorim Responds to the Pressure
Speaking after the derby, Amorim admitted he understands the pressure but insisted he won’t abandon his principles.
“It is not a record you should have at Manchester United,” he said. “If the club wants a different style of play, then they have to change the manager. Until then, I will keep working my way and give everything for this club.”
Amorim also acknowledged the pain of recent results, saying he was “suffering more than anyone” but remained determined to keep fighting.
Neville’s Sack Timeline Warning
Gary Neville has suggested that the upcoming clash with Chelsea could be pivotal for Amorim’s future.
“If United lose again, that would be three defeats in five games, and serious questions will be asked,” Neville told Sky Sports. “This wasn’t an angry or frustrating performance against City – it was just flat. That in itself is worrying.”
Richards: ‘It’s Not Working’
Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards offered some sympathy for Amorim but admitted that the current system is failing. “You can see what he’s trying to do, but at the moment it’s simply not working,” Richards said.

A Worrying Trend
Between the lack of results, flat performances and mounting pressure from pundits and fans alike, Amorim’s position is becoming increasingly fragile. The Chelsea game now looms as a make-or-break moment for the Portuguese coach, with many wondering if United’s patience is running out.
To highlight the scale of the problem, Arsenal have lost the same number of Premier League games in the last three years as Manchester United have under Amorim since his appointment in November 2024. It’s a stark reminder of just how far behind their rivals United have fallen.
